Volkswagen unveils the California Concept, a preview of the next-gen California camper, set for production in 2024. The Concept introduces a plug-in hybrid powertrain, connectivity features, and an evolved interior design.
Volkswagen’s iconic California camper journey began in 1988 with the introduction of a revolutionary concept – a camper based on the Bus (T3) model. Created in collaboration with Westfalia Werke, this marked the inception of a legacy synonymous with exploration and adventure.
As the partnership expanded, Westfalia Werke extended the California brand to T4-based camper vans in Europe, while Volkswagen partnered with Winnebago for the American market’s equivalent Eurovan model.
With the transition to the T5 model, Volkswagen took production into its own hands, resulting in the first “made-in-Hanover” Volkswagen California twenty years ago. This year, the German automaker commemorates this milestone with the unveiling of the California Concept, providing a glimpse into the upcoming next-generation California camper scheduled for production in 2024.
The California Concept, based on the Multivan T7 LWB, seamlessly combines everyday utility with the spirit of exploration. It embraces innovation by introducing a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time in the lineage, enabling both limited electric mobility and extended range, while a fuel-efficient 1.4-litre petrol engine will cure your range anxiety. Connectivity remains a focus, complemented by the “Cali on Tour” app, while teaser images hint at an evolved interior design with features like a removable tablet and dual sliding doors.
