Audi Unveils Activesphere: Electric Off-Road Concept Car

The latest electric concept car from German car manufacturer Audi, the Activesphere, has been revealed as a sleek coupe-sedan with off-road capabilities. Dubbed the fourth instalment in Audi’s “Sphere” series of electric concept cars, the Activesphere boasts the strongest connections to the brand’s existing models yet.

Featuring a body that incorporates elements of the electric E-Tron GT, as well as styling elements from the A4 Allroad and A6 Allroad off-road wagons, the Activesphere boasts a sleek four-door coupe-like design with extra ground clearance of up to 248mm and rugged-looking body cladding on the sills and bumpers.

Despite its off-road focus, the Activesphere is fitted with 22-inch wheels (shod in 285mm wide all-terrain tyres) and active aerodynamics, which close or open the gaps between the thick wheel spokes for greater efficiency. The vehicle’s cargo bed features a drop-down tailgate rather than a traditional lift-back hatch, allowing for the transportation of oversized items.

Inside, the Activesphere features four spacious seats and augmented reality headsets for the occupants, allowing for the viewing and interaction with the car’s controls and information displays without the need for physical screens.

Built on Audi’s upcoming Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform, a joint project with Porsche, the Activesphere develops up to 325kW and 720Nm of power from a 100kWh battery pack. Incorporating 800-volt technology, the Activesphere’s battery can be charged at up to 270kW, providing up to 300km of driving range with just 10 minutes of charging.

While the Activesphere is unlikely to go into production, elements of the concept may appear in future models as Audi plans to exclusively launch electric cars from 2026, before phasing out all petrol and diesel models globally by 2033.
