A member of the Car Sharers Australia Facebook Group has blasted an unnamed Uber Carshare owner for their unroadworthy vehicle, only for a sleuth to point out that the owner is listed as Will Davies, founder and CEO of Uber Carshare.
Update 20/05/24: The vehicle has now been serviced, though the (publicly accessible) service invoice, made out to Will Davies, doesn’t mention tyres or glass repair (likely done elsewhere). It is interesting that the invoice notes an outstanding oil leak:
At the next service or sooner:
There is oil leaks in various places. Most of the oil is coming out of the split intercooler.
In an anonymous post, an Uber Carshare borrower has voiced concerns about the safety of vehicles on the Uber Carshare platform. The borrower hired a van from Randwick in Sydney with plans for an Easter long-weekend road trip, but it was cut short on the way to Canberra when “the car was unable to hold its line, and the steering wheel vibrated whenever the speed exceeded 90km/h.”
The borrower claims they inspected the vehicle then notified Uber, with photo evidence, that “one front tyre was completely bald, and another was bald on one side, [and there was] an unrepaired windscreen chip impairing the driver’s vision.” Unsatisfied with the photos, Uber “requested that the car be formally defected by local police”.

Sure enough, Australin Federal Police defected the vehicle, noting “bad front tyres, right wheel out of alignment” and the borrower was on a train back to Sydney with what they could carry, the rest of their belongings still in the stranded vehicle.
Amongst heated discussion in the Facebook post’s comment section, a sleuth uncovered the vehicle’s Uber Carshare listing. The listing displayed the profile picture of Uber Carshare’s CEO and Founder, Will Davies, alongside the name ‘Scout Fleet,’ which is used for vehicles owned directly by Uber Carshare. If that wasn’t bad enough, the listing indicates that the vehicle is “Just Listed” with only 4 trips.
How could a newly listed vehicle directly owned by Uber Carshare be in such an unsafe condition?
