Kia targets 20,000 sales in ute’s first year

Kia Australia’s recently appointed CEO, Damien Meredith, has expressed ambitious goals for the company in the utility market during a recent interview. Meredith aims for Kia to secure a 10 percent share of Australia’s pick-up market, which recorded nearly 230,000 sales last year, making it one of the largest markets globally.

Based on Meredith’s statements, this translates to a minimum of 20,000 annual ute sales for Kia Australia. If achieved, this would position the Kia TK (working name) among the top four most popular utes in the country, trailing behind the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, and Mitsubishi Triton, along with the Isuzu D-MAX.

This would propel Kia, who outperformed its sister brand Hyundai in 2022, past 100,000 annual vehicle sales, overtaking Mazda (which achieved 95,700 sales last year) to claim the second spot in Australia’s overall auto sales race, trailing only behind Toyota.

While an Australian trademark filing for the name ‘Tasman’ has been submitted, representing a potential option for the Kia TK, Meredith noted that the final decision on the nameplate is still under discussion. It’s worth mentioning that the Kia TK will benefit from Kia Australia’s comprehensive seven-year warranty, ensuring peace of mind for customers.

Despite indicating a projected arrival of the new ute in 2025 to Australian dealers, which would suggest a potential global debut in the coming year, Kia’s local chief hinted that the launch may be as late as 2026 for the full line-up, which is expected to include a diesel, petrol, and even electric options. This timeline indicates that Kia is prioritizing careful planning and development to ensure a successful entry into the highly competitive commercial utility market.
