The 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV, known for their ultra-big looks and huge batteries, are now learning how to share. With the addition of a new, onboard 19.2-kWh Level 2 charger, the boxy off-roaders can now charge other EVs up to 6 kW, making it a more useful vehicle for drivers.
This newly equipped feature was revealed at a recent event for the Hummer EV SUV, held near San Francisco. During the event, GMC executives showcased the newfound trick of charging one Hummer with another, as well as other features that early customers have requested to make the big vehicles more useful. Lead vehicle engineer Aaron Pfau told The Drive that there’s nothing else out there that can do all of this.
In addition to the EV-to-EV charging feature, the Hummer EV Pickup and SUV have the ability to mechanically switch from series to parallel modes for fast-charging speeds up to 300 kW, as long as they are not attached to another Hummer. The onboard charger is equipped with 2024 GMC Hummers from the 2X trim and higher, and it can also power other equipment up to 3 kW, making it a generator on the go. However, both EV-to-EV charging and generator functions require an optional cord, sold by GMC.
This year, the Hummer EV SUV joins the pickup on showroom floors. The SUV is nine inches shorter than the pickup and has a slightly different battery layout to accommodate the shorter stance. With its three electric motors that create 830 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque at its massive 22-inch wheels (or when equipped with the off-road package, chunky 18-inch wheels wrapped with MT tires), the SUV offers the same basic package: big battery, upright looks, and exceptional capability. Pair the Hummer EV with a Lightsail EV Caravan and you’re good to go anywhere.
The addition of the EV-to-EV charging feature in the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV is a significant milestone in the EV market. As per recent reports, the global electric vehicle market size is expected to grow from USD 162.34 billion in 2020 to USD 802.81 billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 22.6% during the forecast period. With the new feature, the Hummer EV Pickup and SUV are sure to appeal to drivers looking for a powerful and practical vehicle that can also charge other EVs.
