KGM unveils new dual-motor hybrid system

KG Mobility (KGM) has completed certification from South Korea’s Ministry of Environment ahead of the upcoming launch of the Torres Hybrid, revealing key specifications of its newly developed hybrid system.

The Torres Hybrid features KGM’s Dual-Tech Hybrid System, a next-generation full-hybrid setup co-developed with China’s BYD. This system incorporates direct parallel dual motors, significantly improving real-world fuel efficiency by optimising both electric and internal combustion power. According to KGM, the hybrid system was developed within a year.

Innovative hybrid technology

At the core of the Torres Hybrid is an e-DHT (electrified Dedicated Hybrid Transmission), which integrates motors, controllers, and transmission components to reduce weight and enhance efficiency. The system utilises P1 and P3-type drive systems, enabling multiple driving modes:

  • EV mode – Runs solely on electric power
  • HEV mode (parallel hybrid) – Combines engine and motor power for efficiency
  • Engine drive mode – Prioritises engine power for high-speed performance

KGM claims that in urban driving, the Torres Hybrid can operate in EV mode up to 94% of the time, delivering a quiet, EV-like experience. At higher speeds, the hybrid system enhances performance by using both the high-output electric motor and internal combustion engine.

Pricing and launch timeline

KGM plans to launch the Torres Hybrid in March, with an expected starting price in the low ₩30 million KRW range. Final pricing and specifications will be confirmed at launch.

What this means for the new Musso

The introduction of the Dual-Tech Hybrid System could signal future electrification for the Torres-based KGM Musso pickup. If KGM adapts this hybrid system for the Musso, it could provide a fuel-efficient alternative to traditional diesel powertrains while maintaining the towing and load-carrying capability expected from a ute. The high torque output from the dual-motor setup could enhance off-road performance and low-speed traction, making a hybrid Musso particularly appealing for Australian buyers looking for a balance of power and efficiency.

While KGM has yet to confirm hybrid plans for the new Musso, the successful integration of the Dual-Tech Hybrid System in the Torres suggests the technology will be extended to the brand’s Torres-based ute.
