Uber Paying Aussies Up To $1,300 To Ditch Their Car For A Month

As cities across Australia grow and populations increase, traffic congestion has become a major issue. According to a report by the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport, and Regional Economics, congestion in Australia’s capital cities cost an estimated $16.5 billion in 2015, a figure that is projected to rise to $30 billion by 2030.

With up to 75% of cars on the road having only one occupant, Uber has responding by launching its “One Less Car” initiative in Australia. Uber’s social trial, conducted by The Behavioural Architects (a team of behavioural scientists) aims to explore the benefits and drawbacks of giving up a car for a month.

Participants will be provided with transport credits worth over $1300 to use on alternative modes of transportation, such as public transport, electric bikes and scooters, ride sharing, and car sharing. They will also be fitted with personal health trackers to measure any changes to their health and wellbeing resulting from their altered commuting habits.

According to a survey conducted by Uber, nearly 50% of Australians have experienced road rage due to traffic congestion. Additionally, over 60% of Australians said they have been late for an appointment due to traffic. Uber claims Australians may not only reduce their carbon footprint but also save time and reduce stress.
